What is appliance repair?
Appliance repair is finding and fixing the part that stops a home appliance from working, instead of replacing the whole unit. A technician tests parts such as motors, pumps, valves, heating elements, sensors and control boards, replaces the one that failed, then runs the appliance to confirm the fix.
Most appliances fail because of one worn part. A refrigerator that will not cool often has a failed fan motor, a frosted evaporator or a bad start relay. A washer that will not drain usually has a clogged pump filter or a failed drain pump. Fixing that one part is usually far cheaper than buying new, and it keeps a working appliance out of the landfill.

Smell gas near a stove, oven or gas dryer?
Do not touch switches. Leave the home and call 911 and your gas utility from outside. Call for repair only after the utility says it is safe.
Water spreading across the floor?
Turn off the supply valve behind or under the appliance, unplug it, then call.
Sparks, smoke or a burning smell?
Switch off the breaker or unplug the appliance and keep it off until it is checked.

Keep the doors closed. FoodSafety.gov says a closed fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours and a full freezer about 48 hours.

How do I know my appliance needs repair?
Your appliance likely needs repair if it makes new noises, leaks, smells like burning, shows an error code or takes much longer to do its job. Catching these signs early usually means a smaller repair and less damage to floors and cabinets.
- New grinding, buzzing or banging noises
- Water leaking onto the floor
- A burning or electrical smell
- Food not staying at 40°F or below
- Clothes still wet or not clean
- An error code on the display
- Tripped breakers or no power
- Cycles taking much longer than before

Should I repair or replace my appliance?
Repair is usually the better choice when the appliance is less than halfway through its expected life and the repair costs less than half the price of a new one. Replacement makes more sense near the end of its life, or when a major part such as a compressor fails.
Energy use matters too. AHAM, citing the U.S. Department of Energy, says a refrigerator 15 years or older uses twice the energy of a new ENERGY STAR model. Use the repair-or-replace guide.
| Appliance | Average life (NAHB) |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator (standard) | 17 years |
| Freezer (standard) | 16 years |
| Washer | 13 years |
| Dryer | 14 years |
| Dishwasher | 10 years |
| Electric range | 17 years |
| Gas range | 19 years |
| Microwave | 11 years |

- If water is leaking, turn off the supply valve behind or under the appliance and unplug it.

- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed. A closed fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours (FoodSafety.gov).
